President Nguyen Minh Triet met leaders from three major Japanese economic groups in Tokyo on November 27 and witnessed 14 agreements worth US $4.2 billion between Vietnamese and Japanese businesses.

During his meeting with leaders from Marubeni, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Itochu Group, President Triet said Vietnam wanted to expand co-operative ties with Japan in all areas.

Vietnam is determined to further create an open investment environment and facilitate foreign operations, including Japanese businesses, he said.

Japanese economic groups? leaders spoke highly of the Vietnamese investment environment and labor force. They also said they planned to expand their operations in Vietnam.

President Triet proposed Japanese businesses increase their investment in important projects such as the construction of underground systems in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, waste treatment systems in big cities and urban infrastructure.

The 14 agreements signed during the day included a US $1.25 billion memorandum of understanding on the Vung Ang thermo-electric power plant 1 between Sumitomo and the Lilama Corporation.

There were also strategic partnership and thermo-electric and wind power plants agreements valued at US $1.5 billion between Marubeni and the Saigon Investment Joint Stock Company.

On the afternoon of November 26, President Triet attended the Japan-Vietnam Business Forum.

President Triet is on a five-day official visit to Japan which began on November 25 at the invitation of Emperor Akihito.
