The government aims to achieve economic development goals without sacrificing environmental conservation, President Yudhoyono said in a speech to commemorate World Environment Day last Tuesday.
"The green economic development approach is a major leap for us, because we have abandoned the previous economic practices which chased short-term benefits and passed down various environment problems," Yudhoyono said.
Indonesia has pledged to reduce its carbon emissions 26 percent by 2020.
At a seminar on green development last week, representatives of Indonesia's forestry, mining and plantation sectors said they were committed to sustainable development practices, the Jakarta Globe reported.
Chair of the government's REDD+ Task Force Kuntoro Mangkusubroto said the private sector should not wait for the government to lead the way toward green economic development. "Each sector should have the same obligation to apply good practices," Kuntoro was quoted as saying.
