Street vendors donate to KPK building construction |

TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta: The white envelope was addressed to the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) chief Abraham Samad. Inside the envelope were 10 crisp one-hundred-thousand rupiah bills. The Rp1 million, according to Indonesian Street Vendors Association secretary-general, Junaedi Sitorus, was collected from fellow street vendors concerned about the KPK’s unfulfilled wish for a new building.
“We donated because we wanted the KPK to keep fighting against corruption despite obstruction from the House of Representatives (DPR),” said Junaedi after visiting the KPK building on Monday.
Junaedi believes that if all street vendors collect money for the KPK, the anti-graft watchdog will be able to build a new office without having to wait for the DPR. Junaedi estimated that if all 54 million Indonesian working as street vendors were willing to donate Rp1,000 for three days, a total of Rp162 billion could be collected.
