TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta: Megawati Soekarnoputri, chairman of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), has responded to the Malaysian government’s claims to the Tortor dance and Gordang Sambilan musical instruments, which originated from Mandailing, North Sumatra.

“When [our culture] is ‘stolen’ by Malaysia we’re outraged. [But] we never bothered to patent those [cultures],” said Megawati during the inauguration of the Merah Putih Taruna central leadership board (DPP) and the Department of Students, Youth and Sports at the PDI-P’s main office in Lenteng Agung, Jakarta, on Tuesday.

Mega said that she had proposed that Indonesian culture be patented when she was vice president. “I mentioned intellectual property rights. There are laws for that and it [culture] can be patented,” Megawati said.
