The 2012 Indonesia Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation conference and exhibition kicked off last Tuesday at the Jakarta Convention Center, featuring discussions and workshops on geothermal, solar, wind and other renewable energy development projects. Up to 75 international and local energy companies participated in the three-day event aimed at attracting international investments in green energy development. The Indonesian government has encouraged tapping the country's renewable energy sources as energy supplies are increasingly challenged by growing demand.
"The technologies for developing renewable energy have been advancing rapidly. They have also become much more economic," Vice President Boediono said at the conference's opening ceremony.
The Energy Ministry has said Indonesia should aim to produce 25 percent of energy from renewable energy sources. At the conference Tuesday, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Jero Wacik said the purchasing price for geothermal power plans will be raised to attract investors. The government also announced a plan to offer areas for geothermal development projects in the Matako area in East Nusa Tenggara, Gunung Endut in Banten, Songa Wayaua in North Maluku, Bora Pulu in Central Sulawesi, Wai Ratai and Danau Ranau in Lampung, Simbolon Samosir in North Sumatra and Candi Umbul Telomoyo in Central Java.
