Yudhoyono issues instructions to prevent further clashes in Sampang PDF Print E-mail

TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta: President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has instructed the security forces and law enforcement agencies at the headquarters and in the East Java area to take immediate and appropriate action to handle the clashes in Sampang.

"So it doesn’t ever happen again in the same place," said Yudhoyono in a limited cabinet meeting on Sampang, in the President's office, Monday, August 27, 2012. Especially, Yudhoyono continued, since it was not the first time it happened. "It’s happened twice in as many years, and another time prior to that," he said.

Attending the meeting, among others, were Vice President Boediono; Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Djoko Suyanto; Minister of Religious Affairs Suryadharma Ali; Minister for Justice Affairs Amir Shamsuddin; Minister for Home Affairs Gamawan Fauzi; Chief of National Police Gen. Timur Pradopo; Head of the National Intelligence Agency Marciano Norman; Attorney General Basrief Arief; Minister State Secretary Sudi Silalahi; and Cabinet Secretary Dipo Alam. Based on information so far from the Coordinating Ministry for Political, Legal and Security Affairs, the riots began around 11 o'clock yesterday. There were around 1,000 people who misunderstood, who destroyed and burned the house of Tajul Muluk, a Sampang Shiite leader who had been jailed for blasphemy. At least two people were killed and five houses burnt by the riot during Eid Al-Fitr.
