From prison, an accidental activist |

When Boeung Kak lake protesters converged on the Phnom Penh Municipal Court to demand justice for imprisoned activist Yorm Bopha last month, an increasingly familiar face was at the front.
After her fellow activists chanted, released birds from a cage and then dispersed, Song Srey Leap, 27, remained at the court’s entrance.

Old soldiers won’t fade away |

"I don’t know how to protect the territorial integrity [of the nearby Cambodian-Thai border] – even my three hectares of land I cannot protect,” said Bun Chanthorn, 54, one of hundreds of retired and active soldiers who since 2010 have been battling the local authorities and a rubber company over thousands of hectares of land in Pursat’s Veal Veng district.
In 2000, Chanthorn, along with more than 500 families, moved to the newly established commune Thma Da after local authorities put the land aside for former Khmer Rouge soldiers who joined Cambodian forces after the 1998 integration. More than a decade later, 65 of those families are mired in an increasingly protracted battle to have the land they were given formally recognised.

He was just a teenager at the time. Furious at the way his stepfather scolded a bunch of rowdy friends, he lashed out with a punch that proved to be fatal. Held to account for his stepfather's death, all the youth thought at the time was "how unfortunate I am."
The 21-year-old, who is serving a prison term for the crime, has found redemption. He said he now realizes that he has only himself to blame for what happened to him.
