The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and Indonesian NGO coalition Eyes on the Forest have released a new Google Earth mapping tool that allows the public to visualize Sumatra's forests and wildlife to aid in protecting the island's forests and biodiversity.

The mapping project details the shrinking habitats of endangered wildlife such as tigers, elephants, rhinos and orangutans. The maps highlight Sumatra's biodiversity and carbon stock stored in its forests and peatlands and will make publicly available a growing database of land cover and land use compiled by experts over decades of research in Sumatra.

"Our conviction is that if we empower people with the information, the forests of Sumatra cannot only be saved, but we can restore them," WWF President and CEO Carter Roberts said in a statement last week announcing the new mapping tool.

Fines for drivers who leave their vehicles idling on the side of the road for more than three minutes are set to be implemented tomorrow.

The Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) said more than 34,000 warnings have been issued during a three-month grace period at places such as schools, hospitals and bus and train stations — where drivers are most likely to park their car and keep the engine running.

Over a month after an Aceh court threw out a lawsuit brought by conservationists challenging development in the spectacular Tripa peat forest, the government is investigating palm oil companies accused of destroying the peatlands.

As criminal investigations begin into palm oil companies accused of burning a peatland forest - locally referred to as Rawa Tripa - in the once tsunami-ravaged province of Aceh, there are strong indications that this peat forest will be included back into an indicative map of protected areas this month.
